You wake up in the middle of the night to a noise downstairs. You grab a gun
and head downstairs. You rush to the open window and see a burglar running
away. You brag to all and sundry how you chased away the burglar.
In 1948 Palestine the British are leaving. Israel bravely declares its
independence and celebrates its War of Independence every year.
What is the difference?
As a matter of fact this was such a brave act it was on May 14, one day
before the official end of the British mandate on May 15. The last possible
date to chase away the fleeing burglar and still be able to make a
declaration with a straight face.
